The Glen Abbey Toastmasters club prides itself on being a very social and fun-loving club, fostering camaraderie and good will amongst its members.

While we follow the strict educational guidelines as set out by Toastmasters International (TMI), we, as a club, offer many social occasions where members can get to better know each other.

The Meeting After the Meeting

After our regular Toastmasters meeting, our honorary chair of the 'Wine & Beer Tasting' committee invites all interested member and guests to an informal gathering, currently held at the Niblick pub (Upper Oakville Shopping Centre). More often than not, particularly memorable aspects of the meeting just past form part of the discussion.

As a first time guest, you can ask any member about Toast-masters in a more informal setting!

The Annual Christmas Party

A very popular event for members and their significant other is the Christmas event. It starts with the last meeting before the holiday and finishes up with a dinner & fun event hosted by one of members.

I addition to a sumptuous pot-luck dinner, the occasion provides the opportunity for fellow members to display their talents in terms of spontaneous entertainment. You will be surprised at the variety of available talent.

The Speech Contests

Glen Abbey participates in all 5 contests held throughout the season:

  • Humourous Speech Contest
  • Table Topics Contest
  • International Speech Contest
  • Evaluation Contest, and
  • Tall TalesContest

Whether at the Area, Division or District level, Glen Abbey supports its club winners in all contests.

In a recent competition held by District 60, a support team of 18 club members was present to cheer on our own Glen Abbey member, Mr Tony Corrie, who had previously won at the Club, Area and Division level (a first for Glen Abbey Toastmasters)

At the next opportunity, come and join us at a contest. As you can imagine, the competition becomes ever more intense as the participants move up the area, division, and district levels.

District Conferences

Speech contests are only a part of the annual Spring and Fall conferences. The 3-day event twice a year offers a variety of educational seminars, both for attendees and workshop leaders, dinner and brunch sessions with keynote speakers, and of couse the formal dinner/ dance refered to as the Governor's Ball.

The event is open to Toastmasters and their guests and provides an affordable get-away, particularly when held outside the city, for anyone interested in the educational and social aspects of Toastmasters.

The camaraderie is great as you meet many familiar faces. You see, attending conferences can be addictive. Not only do you get an opportunity to listen to the best of the best in the district, but the educational sessions are often motivational and entertaining, and you will leasve the conference re-charged with energy, guaranteed!

The Annual Charter Party

Held at the end of the September-to-June season, this event celebrates the founding of Glen Abbey Toastmasters back in March 1992. The format is dinner/ dance, usually with a guest speaker. The Charter Party also formally announces and welcomes the newly elected Club Executive Committee and gives thanks to those vacating their positions.

The 'Love' Connection

So named after its host, the annual summer BBQ, usually held in August, brings together present and often past members for an afternoon of relaxation in all its forms, before the beginning of the upcoming September startup.
